A tense, tight final was decided by a moment of genius in extra time. Mario Götze, who had come off the bench, controlled a cross on his chest and volleyed past Romero to score the only goal in the 113th minute. Germany became the first European nation to win the World Cup in South America. Earlier in the tournament they had humiliated hosts Brazil 7–1 in a semi-final that will never be forgotten. Messi won the Golden Ball but couldn't prevent Argentina losing a second final in eight years.
