π The Story of the Final
Spain won their first ever World Cup in a bruising, cynical final. The Netherlands committed 28 fouls and had John Heitinga sent off in extra time. AndrΓ©s Iniesta scored the only goal four minutes from the end of extra time with a cool finish. Spain, built on the tiki-taka passing philosophy of Xavi, Iniesta, and their Barcelona teammates, had already won Euro 2008 and would go on to win Euro 2012 β making this the centrepiece of the greatest run by any international team in history. Iker Casillas's save from Arjen Robben's one-on-one chance in extra time was decisive.
