Spain won their first ever World Cup in a bruising, cynical final. The Netherlands committed 28 fouls and had John Heitinga sent off in extra time. Andrés Iniesta scored the only goal four minutes from the end of extra time with a cool finish. Spain, built on the tiki-taka passing philosophy of Xavi, Iniesta, and their Barcelona teammates, had already won Euro 2008 and would go on to win Euro 2012 — making this the centrepiece of the greatest run by any international team in history. Iker Casillas's save from Arjen Robben's one-on-one chance in extra time was decisive.
