Brazil retained their World Cup title despite losing Pelé to injury in the group stage. Masopust gave Czechoslovakia a shock lead with a clinical finish. But Brazil were too strong — Amarildo (Pelé's replacement) equalised and Zito and Vavá wrapped up a comfortable victory. Garrincha, who had a deformed spine and bent legs, was the tournament's outstanding player. It was a solid rather than spectacular triumph, overshadowed by Pelé's absence, but Brazil's quality throughout was undeniable.
