Argentina's first World Cup was won on home soil in extraordinary, controversial circumstances. Kempes, the tournament's top scorer, opened the scoring but Nanninga equalised with eight minutes left. Rob Rensenbrink hit the post in the last minute of normal time — a centimetre from giving the Netherlands the title. In extra time, Kempes scored a second and Bertoni added a third. The tournament is forever shadowed by Argentina's military junta hosting it as propaganda, and allegations that Argentina's victory over Peru (6–0, exactly what they needed) may have been arranged. On the pitch, Kempes was magnificent.
