π The Story of the Final
The Total Football Dutch side, built around Johan Cruyff, were the most exciting team of the era β and lost. The Netherlands scored from the kick-off without a German player touching the ball, Neeskens converting a penalty after just 90 seconds. Germany then equalised through Breitner's penalty and took the lead when Gerd MΓΌller twisted and scored just before half-time. Despite overwhelming Dutch pressure in the second half, West Germany held on. It remains one of history's greatest injustices in football β the most entertaining team of the era failed to win the trophy. Cruyff never won the World Cup.
