๐Ÿ“– The Story of the Final
The Miracle of Bern. Hungary were the greatest team on earth โ€” unbeaten in four years, having won Olympic gold, having crushed England 6โ€“3 at Wembley. In the group stage they had beaten West Germany 8โ€“3. In the final, Puskรกs and Czibor scored within eight minutes. Morlock pulled one back and Rahn equalised at 2โ€“2. Then with six minutes left, Rahn rifled in the winner. Hungary's Puskรกs had a late goal ruled out for offside. West Germany, regarded as enormous underdogs, became world champions. It remains one of sport's greatest upsets. The result devastated Hungary and coincided with the end of their golden era.
