Italy became the first nation to successfully defend the World Cup title. Playing under the shadow of Mussolini's fascist government, the Azzurri were a formidable side. Colaussi and Piola dominated, with Piola scoring twice. Hungary, who had reached the final despite being outsiders, competed gamely — Titkos and Sárosi replied — but Italy were too strong. The tournament was played without England (who still refused to participate), Argentina, and Uruguay, who boycotted. It would be the last World Cup for twelve years — the Second World War intervened.
